Requirements
The call for applications sets eligibility rules on top of a university's own entry requirements for a specific study programme (grades, portfolio, prior study). This page covers only the programme-wide rules.
Citizenship and sending partner
- You apply through the sending partner of your own citizenship, never through another country's.
- Hungarian citizens, including dual citizens, and people with a refugee, stateless, asylum-seeker, subsidiary-protection or long-term Hungarian resident status are not eligible.
Age
For the 2026/2027 round, applicants born after 31 August 2008 were not eligible — i.e. applicants had to be at least 18 by 31 August 2026 — except for Dance study programmes. The exact cut-off date moves with each round; check the current call.
Not eligible to apply
- Applicants applying for a doctoral programme in the same round as a bachelor's/master's/non-degree application — only one or the other, not both.
- Self-funded students already enrolled at a Hungarian university who are applying for a study level below their current one (for example, a self-funded master's student applying for a bachelor's scholarship).
- Former Stipendium Hungaricum holders re-applying for full-degree or partial studies at the same cycle or a lower level than the one they already held — moving up a level, e.g. a former bachelor's holder applying for a master's, is allowed.
- Former scholarship holders who accepted a scholarship in a recent round but never travelled to Hungary or started their studies, and did not notify Tempus Public Foundation by the deadline set for that.

Language proficiency

Once admitted, scholarship holders (other than those studying entirely in Hungarian) must also attend a compulsory "Hungarian as a foreign language" course in their first year and pass an exam by the end of the second semester; not attending stops the monthly stipend, and failing the exam reduces it.
