No. Registration, the online application and taking part in the entrance examinations are free of charge. The programme runs through direct cooperation between Tempus Public Foundation and the sending partners — no agency payment is ever needed.

Yes. Each sending partner has its own requirements and, in some cases, its own deadline — see the relevant country page. Some sending partners ask for no extra material at all.

Only programmes covered by the bilateral agreement between Hungary and the applicant's own country. The exact list is shown in the online application system after the sending country is selected.

No. Documents are uploaded in the Tempus Public Foundation online system and forwarded to the universities from there.

No — entrance examinations take place later, between March and May, after the application deadline.

Yes. Only nominated applicants proceed to the entrance examination stage.

No, there is one application deadline each year.

The application is not accepted; the next opportunity is the following year's round.

No — the order of preference, and the selected programmes, cannot be edited after the deadline. Missing documents can still be uploaded, under the rules on missing documents.

Only in limited cases: at the same study level, only if recommended by the Hungarian host university and if their academic average is above the programme's own average — see the requirements page for the exact rule.

Family-related questions go to the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing, the competent authority — this is outside what Tempus Public Foundation itself decides.

Because there is no bilateral education cooperation agreement between that country and Hungary at the moment.

No — applicants without a passport yet can upload a national ID card copy instead, with a signed declaration to obtain and upload a valid passport by 1 August. A passport is required before entering Hungary if awarded.

Under Act CCIV of 2011 on National Higher Education, every scholarship holder needs a medical certificate of satisfactory health, issued and signed by a physician on the official template, presented at the compulsory medical examination in Hungary. See the medical certificate page.

Yes. Being absent more than 30 days suspends the living and housing allowance until return, since these are a contribution to living costs in Hungary specifically.

Yes, habitually, for the study period. Absences over 10 working days must be reported to the host institution; the institution must authorise a private-purpose absence of 10–30 days within a semester.

Under Section 54(8) of Act XC of 2023 on the General Rules for the Entry and Residence of Third-Country Nationals, a residence permit holder for the purpose of studies or student mobility may work up to 30 hours a week during teaching periods, and full time for up to 90 days a year outside them.

Not one that funds study outside Hungary for more than 30 days — that ends the Stipendium Hungaricum agreement. Shorter stays (up to 30 working days) for a conference or similar, funded by the institution or another programme such as Erasmus+ or CEEPUS, are allowed.

This is arranged directly between the scholarship holder and the university — contact the institutional coordinator.

At least 18 credits on average over the last two semesters with active student status (36 credits total), unless the institution's own rules are stricter.

Only once per study level, by special request, with deadlines of 1 December (spring semester) or 15 May (fall semester), and only at the end of a semester. An extension of scholarship status may be needed and is not guaranteed.

Only for health reasons or an unexpected event outside the applicant's control (force majeure), with proof submitted to Tempus Public Foundation and approval from both the host institution and the sending partner. Already-enrolled students cannot request a postponement.

Yes, since the 2020/21 academic year, for every full-time bachelor's, master's and one-tier master's student — two semesters of "Hungarian as a foreign language", free of charge.

Yes: either through a one-year preparatory course first if you have no Hungarian, or directly if you already have at least an intermediate (B2) level.

No — the requirement applies to full-time bachelor's and master's (undergraduate and postgraduate) students only.
