Study in Hungary without a scholarship

Stipendium Hungaricum is not the only way to study at a Hungarian university. Most Hungarian universities also admit international students as self-funded, tuition-paying students, on their own schedule, with no sending partner and no nomination step.

The self-funded route

• You apply directly to the university and study programme, not through Tempus Public Foundation or a sending partner.
• There is no fixed nationwide deadline — each university sets its own admissions timetable, often with more than one intake a year.
• Tuition fees are set by each university and study programme individually and vary a great deal — check the fee for your specific programme directly with the university rather than relying on a general figure.
• You still need the same kind of student residence permit as a scholarship holder, with proof that you can cover tuition and living costs yourself.
• Degrees from Hungarian universities carry the same recognition, in Hungary and across the EU, whether the student is a Stipendium Hungaricum holder or self-funded.
